Fruit Carving Show

>>  5/13/2014

When Tom Cruise and Olga Kurilenko broke an ice sculpture at a Taiwanese premiere of Oblivion, and the Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs did a Watermelophant Contest, I got that carving art could be turned into an entertaining show. I've had a dream to do a fruit carving perfomance one day. I took down a plan of my possible show including jokes, funny stories and sketchs of garnishes which could be intersting to visitors. I was prepared to meet my chance :)

The opportunity came to me in the begining of May, when I did a Fruit Carving Show at a movie preview "Kitchen In Paris", a comedial story about a russian cafe in Paris.

It was a 30 minutes fruit carving perfomance in the cinema theater before the movie. After a short presentation I involved people in to the art of drink garnishing.

I had some cretaria for my show:
  • beign kids friendly with family content
  • using easy techniques with a simple knife
  • show fruit garnishes that people do not expect to see
  • connection with the movie theme

Instead of 30 minutes I had 1 hour show. When the movie started I still had people at my desk.

See the following pictures of the show.

Today I was invited to Sakhalin TV to show how to make a Christmas fruit decoration.

The TV show will be on air later. But I prepared a photo tutorial for my blog on making a mini fruit garnish for cocktails. You can read it right now by scrolling the page down! :))

You can also watch the last year Christams TV show, where I explained how to do a Christmas tree of fruit and sweets. Though it's in Russian,  I am sure you will get the method.

small mandarin
red apple

Martini glass

paring knife, scissors, toothpicks.

Instruction (click the images to enlarge):
1. Cut a small mandarin in half
2. Gently separate the skin of the flesh and turn the skin inside out.
3. Don't worry about the broken skin. Just cut off the damaged parts or make a zigzag cut with scissors.
4. You will get a nice mandarin star.
5. Cut 4 thin slices of the red apple.
6. Insert a toothpick into the slices to attache all sclices together. Make a fan of them.
7. Pin the mandarin star on the top and insert other toothpick close to the first toothpick to secure the fruit garnish. Use the gap between the toothpicks to set the garnish on the glass.

Pin a small grape or a berry on to the final garnish to hide a sharp tip of the toothpick.
This fruit garnish perfectly fits a martini glass.

Papillion Method For Making Fruit Sculptures. Dragon and Snake Out of Oranges

>>  2/15/2013

I am writing this post to share some news in the world fruit carving industry.
Mr.Paolo Pachetti introduces his fruit sculpting style named Papillion Method.
Paolo has DVDs for sale at his website. Now he is looking for students for his course on cocktail fruit decoration.

I purchased his DVDs in December 2012. I have 3 video tutorials on making a fruit dragon, a lion and cocktail garnishes. Paolo uses pomelo fruit for the big sculptures and small citrus fruits for cocktails.

As far as pomelo is a rare fruit in my place I used grapefruits and oranges for the sculpting.

The dragon on the picture below was made for the male's 60th birhtday party (the birthday guy was the Dragon according to the Chinese astrology) in 2012.
Material: grapefruits.

I found this method interesting and alternative to watermelon carving in winter (say 'no-watermelon-season'). The method allows to create various fruit models.

I did the Snake, a host of the year 2013, out of oranges for New Year exhibition.
