Lazy Pelmenys. Russian Food Recipe

>>  5/01/2012

The 1st of May was a holiday in Russia. I took my time to make a photo recipe. I recalled the recipe after reading Veggie Cheese Roll-ups at Kathleen's blog Step by Step in the kitchen.
The recipe I'd like to share is a quick edition of the famous russian Pelmeny called Lazy Pelmeny.

I am not skilled in making a dough. But this time I succeed it to my surprise.

For dough you need:
2 cup of flour,
1 egg,
1/2 cup of water
salt

Volcano :)

I am mixing the dough and it seems to me a pleasant work :))

Prepare meat mince, add garlic and spices
Flat the dough

Spread the mince on the dough flat

Roll it up and cut into small parts

Add a sauce (water, mayonnaise, paprika or any spice)

Bake it for 30-40 minutes
Eat pelmenys with a mustard, pickles and sour cream. I love them with japanese vinegar gignger.

In March I hosted Flavour of Russia Event in my blog. Check it up and have a happy cooking!

Looking forward to your entries!

So my first contribution to the Event is Piroshki (small pies) stuffed with leek and eggs.

Piroshki with eggs and leek

Piroshki are small pies with vegetable stuff, meet stuff or berries stuff. Some people love to have them baked, other prefer to have them fried. I like the baked one. Piroshki in Russia is a kind of fast food sold everythere. As far as I care for my health and weight :) I do not eat piroshki often (maybe a couple of times a year). But my family folks feel OK about eating such food :)

To make piroshki like the ones on the picture you need:
Yeast dough 1 kg,
10 boiled eggs,
2 batchs of leek.
You will get about 20-30 pies.

Usually I buy yeast dough in a local bakery so I can't give you a good recipe of it. Sorry for the confusion. I hope you are better than me in a dough making process. I just know that you need some milk, some eggs, some yeast, salt and sugar as basic ingredients. (Oh My, I spoiled the event...)

Stuff:
Chop the leek  and salt it. Chop the eggs and mix with the leek.

Cut the dough in small parts and flatten them out. Place some stuff in the center of the round dough piece and wrap it (join the dough edges).

Bake the pies in the oven till the crust goes brown.

Done!

Thai Carving Event in Tokyo, October 2011

>>  10/10/2011

I am back from Tokyo where I visited the 3rd Thai Carving Contest. I am full with impressions about the Event and the whole trip to Japan. Tokyo was safe and friendly to me. Good wheather and nice people have made my trip.

I went to Tokyo with my Sakhalin friend. We had some adventures in metro and Disney Sea. Tokyo subway is complicated. There are local, rapid and express trains stopping at one station. They take you to the different destinations and you are not sure about the right train. Finally we managed with it.

At the last day of my staying in Tokyo, it was raining. My foot slipped on the floor and I fell down. As a result I've got my umbrella broken, my knees bruised and my foot hurt. That wasn't a serious injury, but I am feeling uncomfortable now. I think that was a kind of compensation for all the credits and gifts from my teachers and the TCA representatives.

The Thai Carving Contest was held in a trading center located at Daimon station. Daimon means a Large Gate. A famous Tokyo Tower is the right behind the gate. Tokyo Tower is one of the best veiwing spots for the city scenery.

The Thai Carving Event is an yearly event organised by Thai Carving Association (TCA) in Japan. This year it was a two-days event (1-2 October, 2011). The first day for the contest and the second day for melon and soap carving classes. They had a guest judge from Thailand Mr.Chat Kunsri, a chef in Shangri La Hotel. He was my teacher for thai style melon carving.

My thai styled melon

To my surprise I was the first and the only eropean at the event. I saw many beautiful works at the contest place. Japanese artists combine thai and japanese styles to get amazing designs. You can check the winner works at TCA page below (please note that the first three photos are gold, silver and bronze medals, all other photos are special prizes):
Soap carving
Melon carving

Contest place. 1 hour and 10 minutes to carve 2 pieces from a melon and a watermelon

40 participants and much more visitors

I met my Facebook friends at the contest!! I love such moments. We had a nice talk with the girls

From the left: Namiko-san, me and Sachiko-san

I bought books, soap and knives there.  I would like to go to Tokyo more often to learn a fine art of japanese carving.

There are a few days left till the end of September. So you still have a chance to send me your fruit and vegetable crafts. I will add them to this page upon my arrival on the 6th of October, 2011. I accept any level  projects from beginers and advnaced artists. To learn something new visit my Fruit and Vegetable Carving Instructions and pick up a good knife.
